HamiltonJet is proud to be selected as the waterjet supplier for the soon to be built sister ship to Isle of Wight ferry operator’s Red Jet 6 which was launched in 2016.
Red Jet 7 will be built in 2018 to replace Red Jet 3 as operator Red Funnel Group continues to update their ferry fleet with state of the art technology.
The boat will be designed by Australian naval architects One2three Architects and built in the United Kingdom by Wight Shipyard.
The new low wash ferry will be designed for maximum efficiency using One2three’s high speed aluminium hull shape and lightweight construction techniques.
With an overall length of 40 metres, Red Jet 7 will carry 277 passengers and travel at a maximum speed of 38 knots, powered by HamiltonJet’s four HM571 waterjets.
Red Funnel currently has 3 Red Jet Hi-Speed catamarans deployed in the UK on its cross-Solent ferry route between Southampton & West Cowes on the Isle of Wight. They are all powered by high-speed MTU diesel engines with waterjet propulsion. The vessels’ speed, manouvrability, stopping power and low wash characteristics are all key design attributes for the route.
The ferries travel from Southampton to West Cowes on the Isle of Wight every 30 minutes during the day, covering the distance of 9.9 nautical miles in approximately 25 minutes per crossing.
